Rooted in Resilience, Crafted in California: Agajanian Vineyards

The story of Agajanian Vineyards isn’t just about grapes and soil, it’s a saga of resilience woven into every bottle. It all began in 1914, when Ardash Agajanian, fleeing the Armenian genocide, arrived in California with nothing but a dream. He found solace in the bustling vineyards of Madera, working alongside an Italian winemaker at the Armenian-owned MISSION BELL WINERY.

Fueled by hope and a deep love for the land, Ardash planted his own 40 acres in 1922 – a tapestry of wine grapes, raisin grapes, tree fruits, and walnuts. This became the foundation for a future legacy.

His son, Joseph, inherited that same pioneering spirit. Throughout the 60s and 80s, he transformed the land, expanding the vineyards to over 800 acres. These weren’t just rows of vines; they were a canvas for Joseph’s artistic soul. The iconic Agajanian Vineyards label, featuring a majestic sailing ship, is a testament to his passion beyond the vines.

Young Gary Agajanian never strayed far from the earth. He remembers working the vineyards from a young age, the feel of soil a constant companion. By 16, he was leasing his own land, cultivating watermelons, cotton, and beans. This deep connection to agriculture led him to pursue a degree in Viticulture and Enology at Fresno State.

But Gary’s ambition stretched beyond the fields. The challenging world of grape marketing beckoned in the 80s. He honed his skills in international sales, traversing 37 countries and negotiating deals for various fruits and vegetables. This experience proved invaluable, shaping him into a master negotiator of the produce world.

In 1991, the dream of crafting his own wines finally took root. Gary purchased his first vineyard and planted a special Zinfandel block, a homage to his ancestral village of Moush. This marked the birth of Agajanian Vineyards in 1998, a boutique winery that has blossomed into a haven for premium California varietals.

But Gary’s story doesn’t end there. He leveraged his expertise to create a full-service winegrape merchant and bulk wine negotiator, serving over 90 wineries across the United States. With access to top vineyard sites throughout California, Agajanian Vineyards can source the finest grapes for both their own label and their clients.

Today, Agajanian Vineyards stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a family. It’s a story of survival, adaptation, and a deep respect for the land. In every sip of their wine, you’ll taste not just the California sunshine, but generations of unwavering determination and a love for crafting exceptional wines.

A Legacy of Expertise: Harry Parducci Jr. Leads Agajanian’s Winemaking

Agajanian Vineyards and Wine Co. boasts a deep well of winemaking expertise, and at its helm stands Harry Parducci Jr., Director of Winemaking. Harry brings over four decades of experience to the table, honed at prominent Sonoma wineries like Valley of the Moon (founded by his grandfather and father!), Kenwood, Adler Fels, and Sonoma Estate Vintners.

This isn’t just experience; it’s a rich winemaking legacy. Harry is a third-generation member of a pioneering

Sonoma Valley family. Witnessing the craft firsthand from his father and Ernie Lane, a legendary Valley of the Moon enologist, Harry’s passion for winemaking blossomed early. He solidified his knowledge with viticulture studies at Santa Rosa Junior College and winemaking extension courses at UC Davis. His first solo harvest as head winemaker came in 1981, marking the beginning of a distinguished career.

Today, Harry leads the charge at Agajanian Vineyards, overseeing all custom winemaking and private label bottling. His expertise ensures that every bottle reflects not only the quality California grapes they source, but also the generations of knowledge passed down through the Parducci family. With Harry at the helm, Agajanian Vineyards continues to craft exceptional wines steeped in tradition and a deep understanding of the craft.
